2024 Gmail/Yahoo Email sending requirements

In an effort to protect user inboxes, both Gmail and Yahoo Mail have introduced a new set of requirements for senders, effective from February 2024. Let’s explore the details and understand what actions Enlitly customers should take to comply with these requirements.

What do the new email sender requirements entail? #

These requirements encompass established best practices that every email sender should follow to ensure optimal deliverability with mailbox providers. The noteworthy aspect is that Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and other mailbox providers will mandate adherence to these best practices for those sending bulk messages exceeding 5000 per day or if a significant number of recipients mark the emails as spam.

The requirements can be categorized into three main areas:

1) A more stringent commitment to domain authentication,

2) Providing recipients with a straightforward method to unsubscribe from bulk emails, and

3) Closely monitoring spam complaint rates and maintaining them below a 0.3% threshold.

Who’s affected by this change? #

Although Gmail has identified a daily sending threshold of 5,000 as a criterion for categorizing a sender as “bulk,” both Gmail and Yahoo have made it clear that the 5,000 limit on volume does not constitute a “safe zone.”

Yahoo explicitly mentioned that there is no minimum volume threshold for the applicability of these requirements. Gmail has emphasized that even senders below the 5,000 limit may experience an impact. Hence, we strongly urge all customers to implement authentication measures, irrespective of their size.

Enlitly system sends transactional emails to Creators’ customers using Creator’s authorized email. This include system generated emails like Pwd reset, Account verfication etc. The Marketing emails are sent via Bulk emails via Broadcast and Sequence Module by emails authorized by Creator, however, this does not include authenticating domain.

What action is required at your end? #

Transition to your domain: If you are using Gmail or Yahoo or similar email to send broadcast or sequence emails via Enlitly, we encourage you to transition to your own domain. You can purchase a domain from ipage, godaddy, Namecheap and many other domain providers. You will also need your own domain email.

Monitor spam rate:

Monitor via Enlitly’s Email Delivery Report: Enlitly system provides a comprehensive delivery report for each bulk and sequence email sent. Please continue to monitor the delivery report and promptly remove/unsubscribe contacts whose emails show up as hard bounces/complaints.

Set up DKIM, SPF and DMARC policy. This change needs to be done in your DNS settings. You will need to add following records to your domain’s DNS setting. The CNAME keys are generated after adding the domain as Verified Domain identity. Email support@enlitly.com to get your domain verified with our email service provider.

TypeNameContent
CNAME key1._domainkey key1.dkim.amazonses.com
CNAME key2._domainkey key2.dkim.amazonses.com
CNAME key3._domainkey key3.dkim.amazonses.com
MX enlitlyfeedback-smtp.us-east-1.amazonses.com
TXT enlitly v=spf1 include:amazonses.com -all
TXT _dmarc v=DMARC1; p=none; sp=none; ri=86400

Depending on your domain host, you may have to include or exclude double quotes. e.g. v=spf1 include:amazonses.com ~all OR “v=spf1 include:amazonses.com -all”

Verify the SPF at https://mxtoolbox.com/spf.aspx with domain name as enlitly@yourdomain.com.

You can also send a test email to your Gmail account and check if SPF, DKIM and DMARC passed or not. Open the test email, find the option to “Show Original”. This will show details like below:

Message ID<xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@email.amazonses.com>
Created at:Fri, Oct 18, 2022 at 5:08 PM (Delivered after 1 second)
From:Team Enlitly <support@enlitly.com>
To:xxxxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com
Subject:Test Email: xxxxxxxxxx
SPF:PASS with IP xx.xxx.x.xx
DKIM:‘PASS’ with domain enlitly.com
DMARC:‘PASS’

What happens if you don’t meet the new requirements?

Google and Yahoo are set to implement mail blocking for messages that fail to meet their requirements. This is expected to manifest as a distinct bounce response, possibly resulting in permanent blocks on specific domains.

Such actions can harm the sender’s reputation and carry enduring consequences for deliverability rates, directly affecting customer engagement and the revenue generated through email marketing.
